A Second Line is the term used for the parade of dancers who follow the band in a New Orleans jazz funeral procession.

This work was created in 2008 as a tribute to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Faced with unimaginable devastation, the residents of New Orleans looked to music and dancing for comfort and inspiration. Mardi Gras went on as always, and the music never stopped.

During the creation of this work, I lost a dear friend and mentor who, unbeknownst to me, had always wanted a Second Line funeral. This piece took on a double meaning and will forever be my homage to the exuberant spirit of this remarkable artist and father of Asheville’s River Arts District.

John Payne, this is for you.
